The School of Athens

On the obverse side, we present the iconic likeness of Heraclitus, the pre-Socratic philosopher of Ephesus, as embodied by Michelangelo in Raphael’s fresco. Heraclitus, known as the “Weeping Philosopher” for his profound insights into the nature of change and the impermanence of existence, is depicted with a countenance of solemn wisdom. Michelangelo, in his portrayal of Heraclitus, captures the essence of philosophical contemplation, with furrowed brow and penetrating gaze that seem to penetrate the very fabric of reality.
